Thy Kingdom Come!

PONTIUS PILATE took one look at the prisoner who stood before him, hands and feet bound and knew this was no ordinary prisoner.  As the governor of Judea, criminals being paraded before him for trial and judgment was a regular affair to him,  An odd assortment of soldiers and religious leaders had escorted Jesus, and Pilate felt something was not right. To make things worse, his wife had sent him a warning about this person defying all protocols.

After a short exchange with the High Priest’s people, Pilate asked Jesus if He were the King of Jews and could not believe his ears when the bedraggled prisoner had answered in the affirmative. It didn’t take him long to decide Jesus was innocent and it was out of jealousy the religious heads had handed Him over to him. From that moment he tried to release Jesus, but to no avail. Ironically, he not only suspected he was dealing with a real king, but he was also frightened of Him. He had always hated the Jews he had been appointed to rule over, in this remote Roman outpost, but he wanted to keep his job. On three occasions during the trial, he referred to Jesus asking to His enemies’ chagrin. Finally, he had written a sign ‘JESUS OF NAZARETH, KING OF JEWS’ in three languages and hung it above Jesus’ head on the cross, as a weak attempt of expressing his vengeance on the Jews who had played a political game with him and had won.

THE KING

Christ Jesus is King. He is King by lineage (Son of Abraham, Son of David—Mathew 1:1); He is King by appointment (Psalms 2:7);

He is King by profession (Mathew 28:18). "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth‘’. His kingship has been emphasized throughout Gospels. Luke 1:32,33: “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.” The Magi knew He was their king when their long search came to an end at Bethlehem.

A vast number of prophets had predicted a coming of a kingdom in Israel ruled by a righteous King (Isaiah 32:1), a king who will overthrow foreign rule and free Israel from oppression, a ruler and High Priest embodied in a Messiah who will restore the glory of the reign of David and Solomon. There is no dearth of eulogies of Him:

Isaiah 9:6, 7 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of His government and peace, there will be no end.

  • Isaiah  32:1  Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and rulers shall rule in judgment.
  • Jeremiah  23:5  Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will raise to David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and act wisely, and shall do judgment and justice in the earth.

 THE KINGDOM

Over 350 similar utterances of prophecies, made over millennia by dozens of people had told everything about the Messiah, but the people of Jesus’ time were disappointed in Him and refused to believe He was the expected Messiah, except for a handful of people.  All that they could think about was of a Deliverer who would overthrow the Roman government and free Israel from their present bondage. On more than one occasion, Jesus had explained to the public, the Pharisees, His disciples and finally the governor of the land that His kingdom was not of this world.  This only deepened the peoples’ animosity against Him. But Jesus never let upon preaching the Kingdom of Heaven. It is surprising at what consistency and how profusely Jesus spoke about the kingdom. A few examples:

Mathew  6:9. 10  Therefore pray in this way: Our Father, who is in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name.  Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

  • Luke  8:1  And it happened afterwards, He travelled in every city and village, proclaiming and announcing the gospel of the kingdom of God. And the Twelve were with Him…
  • Luke 12:32  says “Stop being afraid, little flock, because your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom’’
  • John  18:36  Jesus answered and told Pilate, My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would fight so that I  might not be delivered to the Jews

During His ministry, Jesus travelled from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God (Luke 8:1). The prayer Jesus taught His disciples (what we call ‘The Lord’s Prayer today) starts and ends with the kingdom. He told His listeners ‘’But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you’’ (Mathew  6:33). The first-ever sermon of Jesus on the record starts with the pronouncement of the kingdom (Mathew   4:17). His first discourse with a Pharisee (Nicodemus) is about one’s requirement for entering the kingdom (John 3:3). He makes it clear "Not everyone who keeps saying to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will get into the kingdom from heaven, but only the person who keeps doing the will of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). After the disciples gained some experience He started sending them to preach, and every time the element was Kingdom of Heaven.

The Book of Revelations prophecies the kingdom –

Rev 11:15 (earth’s kingdom becomes God’s and Christ’s kingdom) –

Rev 19:6 Hallelujah! For the Lord God omnipotent reigns!

Rev 19:16  And He has on His garment, and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS

Rev 3:21 declares  To the one who conquers I will give a place to sit with me on my throne, just as I have conquered and have sat down with my Father on his throne.

What will the Kingdom be like? The Lord had tried to explain this through some parables. Let us examine a couple of them:

Matthew 13:44 “The kingdom from heaven is like treasure hidden in a field that a man found and hid it again. In the excitement he went and sold everything he had and bought that field. The field (kingdom) cost a heavy sum, but treasure (salvation) came free!”

Mathew  13:45  “Again, the kingdom from heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. Here God pays a heavy price (His own blood) for us who are precious pearls to Him”.

The Gospels make it clear who is eligible to enter His kingdom:

  • Those who repent and are baptized - John 3:3, 5; Mat 18:3
  • The destitute in spirit – Matthew 5:3
  • Those  persecuted for righteousness – Matthew 5:10
  • Those doing the will of God (not calling Lord….) – Mat 7:21
  • Those who are worthy (net thrown into sea) Matthew 13:47
  • Those who are prepared (wise virgins…..) – Matthew 25:1
  • Sincere servants (using their talents) - Matthew 25:14.

Jesus asked us to pray that His kingdom might come soon. How many of us are remembering to pray for His kingdom? Examine the contents of your prayers. Matthew 6:33 exhorts us to First seek the kingdom and its righteousness. Our priorities have been clearly marked.

The Bible has also clearly mentioned the privileges the citizens of the kingdom will enjoy: I appoint a kingdom to you, as My Father has appointed to Me, that you may eat and drink at My table (Luke 22:28-30)

  • You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1Peter 2:9)
  • He has made us a kingdom, priests for his God and Father, be glory and power forever and ever! Amazingly we are informed that, by virtue of our “citizenship” we will rule along with Him, even judge the 12 tribes of Israel! (Revelations 1:60).

What more can you ask for? Lord, may your kingdom come!
