Why Did Jesus Have to Die?

Image
Romans 8:3 The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent His Son in a body like the bodies sinners have. And in that body, God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving His Son as a sacrifice for our sins A single verse containing four short sentences captures the essence of the whole Gospel message! John 3:16 is also relevant here - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Man can’t attribute “motives” to God. Admittedly it is not for humans to question the sovereign God’s action like why He did this or why He did not do that.   God makes it quite clear that “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, for as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8, 9). No one knows God’s ...

Disciple and Discipleship-IV (Conclusion)

Image
Depending upon our foregoing study, we can come to the following conclusion:  1. Jesus is your singular passion in whom you delight in more than anyone or anything else. 2. You must reject any activity, priority, or plan that does not reflect the person and activities of Jesus Christ. 3. You believe that your time and daily activities no longer belong to you but to Jesus. You may have to drop whatever you were doing to allow Jesus to minister to others through you. 4. You commit your time, talent and treasure to God; you must have the mindset that your resources don’t belong to you any more. 5. Jesus laid His life for us. We must be ready to make any sacrifice for our brothers and sisters who might be less fortunate than you. 6. You must be prepared to give up the love and relationship of your family if called to do so. You must prepared to sacrifice your wealth, your job, your social status, your friends and contacts, education etc. as a disciple of the ...

Disciple and Discipleship-III (Cost of Discipleship)

Luke 14. 25-27 At one time large crowds were now travelling with Jesus, and He turned and said to them,  “If   anyone   comes   to   Me   and   does not   hate   his   father   and   mother   and   wife   and   children   and   brothers   and   sisters—   yes,   even   his   own   life—   he cannot   be   My   disciple. And whoever does not carry his cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple”. Jesus had made it clear that the following will cost the follower something. He never promised believers wealth, power, position or comfort. He knew human nature. If he makes our lives on earth comfortable, then we would follow him only for comfort. Besides, He made it clear that we are only wayfarers and aliens in this world; the world is not our permanent home, but we are bound for paradise and ultimately new Jerusalem or heaven. We must...

Disciple and Discipleship-II (Jesus and His Disciples)

Image
The Gospel of Mathew draws to a dramatic conclusion with the disciples of the Jesus worshipping Him and the Lord responding with this commission:, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, as you go, disciple people in all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded you’’. He assured them that He would remain with them each and every day until the end of the age. (Mathew 28:18-20). Jesus’ disciples were not learned men, and could not be expected to spread their religion by art or talents. They were not men of wealth, and could not bribe men to ...

Disciple and Discipleship-I (Introduction)

Image
John 8:12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”       Who is a disciple? A disciple is by definition a follower and student of a mentor, teacher. He listens to the master’s teachings, accepts them and changes his life in conformation with it. In India - where there is a Swamy or guru or a god-man every 100 km - the word ‘disciple’ is corrupted and lost its original meaning.       (Dera Sacha Sauda in Sirsi, Punjab is an organization headed by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh , who claims to have more than 60 million followers worldwide. He had admirers among the top political leaders of the country. He was accused of murder and convicted of rape. In 2017 a special CBI court in the city of  Panchkula , Haryana found him guilty of raping two D...
